3 Reasons Business Owners Have Anxiety About Marketing

Justin Babcock • September 26, 2019

So, let’s get it out there quickly. Most business owners are afraid of their marketing because:

     1.  They don’t know if it’s working or not, so they are scared to stop.
     2.  They don’t understand the technology that drives their marketing.
     3.  They are afraid of being left behind.

Business owners’ fear of marketing leads to anxiety. And the stress causes the company to hire deceptive marketing firms.

The remedy for this problem is simple: have a basic understanding of the tactics, have a basic knowledge of the tools, and ignore the FOMO. Read on for more details.

You don’t know which marketing tactic is not working, so you are afraid to stop.

As a business owner, you know that the phone stops ringing if you aren’t marketing. What you probably don’t know is what marketing tactics work and which marketing tactics are dogs with fleas. You are stuck… you can’t change because the risk of stopping is too high without reliable information.

Stop the unknown and take control!

The first thing you need to do is open your google analytics, https://analytics.google.com. Poke around the data with an open mind. Sorry, knowing your marketing analytics is not something you can outsource. It’s too easy for people to bullshit you. You have to understand the data.

So, to get started, don’t worry about what you don’t know. Take in what you do know. After becoming familiar with the data, you can begin to see how your marketing campaigns drive site traffic and generating new contacts.

You can make better decisions about spending time and money on print ads, Google Ads, social media, email marketing, and other popular marketing tactics. After the anxiety starts to subside, you have two options. You don’t understand the technology that drives your marketing.

When I talk to business owners, not understanding the technology behind their marketing is their most significant source of anxiety.

You know your business better than anyone. You can talk intelligently about operations, sales, and margins. Unfortunately, all of the applications and marketing jargon makes your head spin. So, you put someone else in charge and hope for the best.

Stop outsourcing the strategy and get your head wrapped around your marketing systems! You are smart.

You started and have maintained a business where so many others fail. Permit yourself to ask questions. And tell the marketing guy that you don’t understand. Make them explain it to you in simple terms. If they can’t, they don’t understand themselves. In the words of Albert Einstein,

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

Our advice is to pick one tactic and spend some time understanding why it’s important, what it does, and how it is done. You don’t need to know how to fly the plane. But, you don’t want to get on a greyhound and be told you are flying the friendly skies.

We suggest reviewing one of the following: Social Media Marketing, Blogging, Email Marketing, Digital Ads, Local SEO, Reputation Management, On-page SEO, and Premium Content Offers every month. Give yourself time and permission to learn. Click here for a more in-depth explanation of each tactic.

You are afraid of being left behind.

The fear of missing out (FOMO) is the biggest reason business owners start to take action and invest in marketing. You see what your competition is doing, you know what your peers are doing, you hear about the positive results, and you have to get on board.

The problem is that most owners try to buy marketing like its a commodity. STOP! Marketing is a primary function of your business.

Marketing is the same as your operational procedures, your sales process, and your financials. Marketing is unique to your business, so you must have a plan.

When someone tells you that they’ve grown because of Facebook, they omit the part about working on their message, understanding their client’s needs, and crafting campaigns that engage their target audience.

Marketing works well when it mirrors your customer’s wants/needs, AND it reflects your operations. When marketing conveys both these things, it is beautiful and it's time to find your marketing platform.

Get started by writing down the advice you give to clients, customers, and prospects every day.
